| I couldn't get satisfaction
with the tabs of this worldwide famous tune that
really tore apart the pop rock landscape of the
sixties : there was before that tune and after. The
tabs of that tune you find on the web are really poor(
and don't speak to me about the powertab version !). I
sometimes wonder what the tabbers really play with
what they tab. But let's come back to the tune.
The
principle of the riff was simple : an overdriven
guitar playing 3 notes accompanied by a bass playing
four so the bass is important here! It was said
after that Keith So to play it we use :

The bass : The clean guitar : I do not guarantee an extreme accuracy of the tab for that guitar but it works. You shift between E and A while playing and leaving the rhythm guitar fill the gaps. *A note on drums : I sampled the original recording at the time when the drums are heard alone just before the choir of 'eh hey hey hey , that's what I say'. With the only sample of 5 beats it is possible to reproduce the beat of the whole tune by simply chaining them with a wave editor ! This is what I did in the demo. You can download the MP3 drums sample here ( 29 kb) and use it the same way or play it in loops. Whether you play alone on multitracks or in a band, you must start the drums first before the intro to get synchronized for the rest of the song. Then, if you record your performance, you must delete the first beats to have the original effect in the intro. The last two beats of the sample match the first two Bs of the second sentence of the lead guitar. Of course if you have a drummer in the band, it is still better, he will start ok . But if not, you will have the comfort to be accompanied by... Charlie Watts himself, as I was in the demo. Have fun . |

Tabbed by myself . All suggestions welcome here.
Richards was so
dissatisfied (sic) with the overdriven sound that he
wanted to remove it! Afterwards the Rolling Stones
ended all their concerts (to my knowlegde) with this
tune but never really recovered the original sound
of that single that was issued in 1965 (I think). Or
has anyone heard a good live version of it ?
The overdriven guitar ( lead
guitar ): you must find a good sound for
it. In the demo I use a zoom GFX 707 (cheap)
with a combination of compressor, crunch, reverb and
equalizer with high treble. If you have good pickups
you can use the drive channel of your amplifier :
personally I found a very good sound on my Fender
Champion 30 that really works miracles in every
circumstance. Then the point when playing
those famous 3 notes ( B C# and D) is to
control the sustain : at times you produce two dry
Bs , at others one dry B then a sustained one.
Always control the sustain on the D.

at the third note. Each time the lead guitar plays B
B it plays E E but not simultaneously. Since I am
unable to note rhythm I must be precise here in
saying that the second E is delayed after the second
B. I noted that in the tabs. So listen to the demo
or .. to the record !
