This version is
from the
stage performance recorded in November 1969 in Madison Square
Gardens in New-York.
I tabbed two guitars and the bass :
I tabbed two guitars and the bass :
- the lead guitar
is tuned in OPEN G : in the
performance it is played by Keith Richards who also
plays with it the first part of the long solo. The second part of the solo is
played by Mick Taylor with a standard tuned guitar. He had also played the rhythm
guitar during the first part also with a standard tuned guitar. I don't know if
they used other guitars during the tune but to simplify all this I tabbed the solo
with the standard tuned guitar. In the tab I assume that the open G tuned Lead
guitar then plays rhythm ( In KR's manner ! I tabbed it fully).
- rhythm guitar : therefore plays rhythm (with very simple chords ) then the solo.

tabbed it rather from the studio version that sounds more interesting to me.(
Keith Richards recorded it).
- the SOLO :
in the performance it lasts 3'10". Sorry I only tabbed for the moment
the first 2 minutes. In the
last minute of this extraordinary solo Mick Taylor speeds up to reach a
pace far beyond my abilities to make a demo ! . To compensate, the first 2
minutes are very carefully tabbed. ( I do not give up the idea of going
on though.)
- the drums in the
demo have been sampled from the studio version.
The making of the song in the studio had
been filmed by the French 'New Wave' director Jean-Luc Godard . This
was filmed as a sort of documentary along with a fancy interview of the
actress Anne Wiazemski and a long monologue by a representative of the
Black Panthers. The film was entitled ONE+ONE (make 2). The
producer ( of the CUPID PRODUCTIONS !!) had decided that this was not
commercial enough. Without 
reporting
to the director he added at the end of the film the final version of
the song and changed the title of the film into 'Sympathy for the
devil' as the poster here shows. Jean-Luc Godard, the film director,
discovered all this at the first presentation of the film at a
festival. Judging that the producer was spoiling his work, he quarelled
with him on the stage of the festival, boxed him in the face in
front of the audience and eventually succeeded in restoring the title
and the content of his work !
